Word from a Bird

New Yorkers, are you ready for some conferences? With the CBGB Music & Film Conference on October 10-11 and the CMJ Music Marathon on October 15-19, Jaybird and our fellow city dwellers, not to mention our clients, are going to be very busy these next few weeks. The Music Business Association (formerly NARM and digitalmusic.org) and Bandsintown will all be represented on panels at both events, so come on out and say hi!The October air also means the summer is officially over and fall has begun.  It was a great season for Jaybird, with a big rebranding announcement from NARM and digitalmusic.org, two new clients joining the fold, big new partnerships for Bandsintown and Rallyverse, and much more! Here’s a taste of what we’ve been up to.
 

First of all, let’s all give a warm welcome to the Music Business Association (Music Biz), formerly known as NARM and digitalmusic.org! Over the last few months, Jaybird has helped them plan and execute their rebranding efforts, which include an overhaul of the organization’s governing structure in addition to the name change. We’re excited to get the word out, and even happier to see the news get picked up by Billboard.biz, The Hollywood Reporter, Music Row, Philly.com, Hypebot, Digital Music News, and more.

And since CBGB and CMJ are the impetus for this newsletter, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that Music Biz executives will be participating in both. Music Biz President Jim Donio will moderate the CBGB panel “Jay Z, JT, Harlem Shake, and Record Store Day: How to Rise Above the Noise in Today’s Music Marketplace” on Friday, October 11, at 1pm, while Vice President of Digital Strategy and Business Development Bill Wilson will moderate the CMJ panel “Paid in Full: Royalties in the Digital World” on Tuesday, October 15, at 11am. We’ll see you there!

But that’s not all! Music Biz is also launching a new quarterly webinar series called Common Ground, with the first installment taking place Thursday, October 24, at 4pm. It will feature a Q&A with Donio and HITS Magazine’s Mark Pearson in which the two will discuss the recent changes to the Music Biz organization and address questions about the transition. The webinar will be free for both members and non-members, and those interested can register at http://musicbiz.org/events/common-ground-virtual-town-hall/.

Cellfish and Bandsintown have also had a busy couple of months, with the latter announcing an innovative new partnership with Zippo, famous for its windproof pocket lighters. Bandsintown now powers the iconic brand’s Virtual Lighter app on iOS and Android, allowing concert attendees to show their appreciation with their phones during their favorite power ballads. In addition, bands can now sell customized Zippo band lighters to their fans through Bandsintown Specials, generating tour revenue beyond t-shirts and albums. Jaybird helped spread the word by landing coverage in a variety of top outlets, including Billboard, Adweek, Mobile Marketer, Hypebot, Marketing Daily, and Mobile Entertainment.Bandsintown representatives will also be making the conference rounds in the weeks ahead, with Randy Nichols scheduled to moderate the CBGB panel “Book The Gig; Sell The Tickets – The Emerging World Of Social Media Ticket Selling” on Thursday, October 10, at 2pm and participate in the “Walk with Me: Mobile Takeover” panel at CMJ on Wednesday, October 16, at 2pm. In addition, Bandsintown CEO Julien Mitelberg will be a panelist at this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event on Wednesday, October 16. His panel is titled “The BIG DATA (Collection) Debate” and will begin at 3pm local time. Make sure you check out those events!
Fantrotter has been tearing it up in the press ever since signing up with Jaybird! After we started getting the word out about the company’s awesome service, a ticketing and travel search engine that lets fans browse the schedule of any performer and helps them compare the prices of ticket and travel options to each event, SoundCtrl and AllFacebook both gave the company great write-ups. FanTrotter Founder and CEO Michael Coletta was also quoted in a San Jose Mercury-News story on last week’s SF MusicTech Summit, and the company was named one of Mashable’s “10 Startups Making Travel More Affordable.” It’s a great start for a great service, and we’re excited to keep working with them going forward.
For NY Tech Meetup, we have continued to promote the organization’s monthly demo nights, including the most recent one on Tuesday, October 8. They’ve also been heavily involved in this year’s NYC mayoral race, hosting a series of in-person Q&As with the major candidates, including eventual nominees Bill de Blasio and Joe Lhota. The results were videotaped and shared with the public on the NYTM website, providing an in-depth look at each candidate’s views on technology-related issues. The organization also teamed with The Work Revolution to host the first Work Revolution Summit in September, bringing together entrepreneurs, investors, organizational designers, and future-of-work experts to discuss the best ways to improve workplace culture. Xconomy was there to check it out, and you can read their recap at the link.We’re also thrilled to see NYTM’s Executive Director Jessica Lawrence and President Nate Westheimer getting recognized for their accomplishments. Both were named to the 2013 Techweek100 list, and Jessica was also named one of The Next Web’s “50 People in NYC’s Tech Scene That You Need to Know.” Congrats to both of them!
We’re also excited to be working with Rebeat, a digital music distributor that also handles a variety of other tasks for users. Jaybird helped the company introduce its expanded Business Edition, which adds royalty accounting, data security, and revenue flow services for labels, publishers, and music catalog owners, landing the news in Billboard.biz. We also announced the release of the company Classical Suite, which lets users search an extensive database of classical music metadata and automatically standardize their tracks so they can be easily organized and sold by digital music stores, and helped the company’s founder and CEO Guenter Loibl publish a Hypebot guest post on how to fix digital distribution. And speaking of Loibl, he is taking meetings in NYC through Friday, October 11. So, if you would like to meet with him and chat about the company, just shoot an email to laurie@jaybirdcom.com.
Rallyverse kicked things off by teaming up with LinkedIn to become the first company to offer users personalized content recommendations from LinkedIn, allowing users to examine the site’s most relevant content and post directly to its Company Pages. The announcement caused a stir in the social media and ad tech scenes, with Adweek trumpeting the news on its homepage. Joe Doran was also busy on the op-ed front, landing a nice piece detailing “7 Ways to Reach New Insurance Buyers Using Social Media” on Property Casualty 360.
