Word from a Bird

Happy Holidays! It’s been a busy fall here in Jaybird land, with all of our clients making major waves in their respective fields. We’ve been there all along the way, helping to amplify their messages and spread the word about their latest products, events, and updates, and more. Over the past few months, we’ve helped the Music Business Association publicize multiple in-depth reports from research firm LOOP as well as their Music Biz 2017 convention and inaugural NY:LON Connect event, Music Reports announce their new royalty collections system, the NY Tech Alliance promote their monthly NY Tech Meetup events while landing several features for CEO Jessica Lawrence Quinn, and Bandsintown release their holiday gift guide. Jaybird has also scored significant coverage for Rainbow Broadband, Vlado Meller, and PRX, plus we’re serving as Media Sponsor for the upcoming NYC events Copyright and Technology 2017 conference on January 24th and the Music 4.5 The Economics of Streaming and the Value Gap on March 29th. It’s a lot to get into, so let’s get started!

After announcing its members-only Music Biz Consumer Insights portal during the Music Biz 2016 convention, the Music Business Association worked with research firm LOOP (Lots of Online People) to produce a series of in-depth reports available exclusively through the portal. These reports covered topics including “Music & Millennials,” “Music Genres: How Different Fans Consume,” “Music Consumption: The Overall Landscape,” “The Market for Giving the Gift of Music,” and “In-Car Music: Listening on the Road.” Jaybird promoted the reports by providing key findings to our contacts, leading to widespread coverage in outlets such as TIME, BBC News, Forbes, Music Week, Music Ally, Hypebot, CMU, RAIN, Music Connection, and All Access.

Speaking of the Association’s annual convention, we also began spreading the word about this year’s Music Biz 2017 event, which will return to the Renaissance Nashville Hotel in Nashville from May 15-18, 2017. So far, Music Biz has announced three award recipients: Pop and Soul band Lukas Graham for a Breakthrough Artist Award, UMG Nashville’s Mike Dungan for the Presidential Award for Outstanding Executive Achievement, and Music Millennium’s Terry Currier for the Independent Spirit Award. Jaybird landed coverage for these announcements in Billboard, Music Row, Music Connection, and All Access as well as a pieces in HITS Daily Double and Music Row for the preliminary agenda announcement, which includes a keynote from Spotify’s Troy Carter.

We are also assisting Music Biz in promoting the first-ever NY:LON Connect event, which they are co-organizing with Music Ally. Scheduled for January 24-25, 2017, in the London offices of leading law firm and event sponsor Reed Smith, the event will feature a mixture of panel sessions, interviews, and presentations from speakers such as Jonathan Dworkin, SVP of Digital Strategy and Business Development at Universal Music Group, and Elizabeth Moody, VP of Global Content Licensing at Pandora. The inaugural event received preview coverage in All Access, and will make its way to New York City in 2018.

Since we love it when our clients work together, we were thrilled to help set up Music Reports’ webinar with Music Biz on “How Music Reports Works with the Music Publishing Community.” It was an extremely in-depth and informative look at the online features for the music publishing community that were launched by Music Reports earlier this year, making the claiming process easier and more transparent for publishers while maximizing royalties. If you’re in the publishing community or just curious about the groundbreaking system Music Reports has created, you can see it for yourself here.

In November, Music Week took an in-depth look at the business of royalty collections including a profile of Music Reports, noting that its platform is “used by 57,000 publishers and representing 180,000 catalogues.” Those numbers are growing rapidly every day, so keep an eye out for more updates and announcements from Music Reports in 2017.

NY Tech Alliance CEO Jessica Lawrence Quinn has been in hot demand over the past few months, during which Jaybird facilitated her appearance on Randi Zuckerberg’s SiriusXM broadcast, Dot Complicated. The two discussed the NYC tech sector, how it is currently faring and how it can be improved in the future, and what can be done to involve more women in the industry. Lawrence Quinn was also featured in Zuckerberg’s #52Women52Weeks Q&A series, in which she discusses her background and how it led her to NYC tech.

Jaybird also continued to promote the Alliance’s monthly NY Tech Meetup events, which continue to draw live demos from some of the best up-and-coming NYC tech companies. Our efforts resulted in full event recaps in Xconomy for the October event, during which Founder Scott Heiferman tried (in vain) to smash two watermelons onstage, and in AlleyWatch for the November event, during which Lawrence Quinn reaffirmed the Alliance’s dedication to diversity on the day after Donald Trump’s election. December’s event was held last week on December 13th, and the next two demo nights will be held on Tuesday, January 10, and Tuesday, February 7. Tickets for January are available now at

After powering hundreds of buildings in Manhattan, Rainbow Broadband took a big step into Brooklyn in 2016 with its first hub there, right in the booming Williamsburg area which is increasingly becoming a hotbed for tech and media startups reliant on lightning-speed fixed wireless Internet connections. Xconomy broke the news and examined Rainbow’s growth as well as the area’s “dearth of high-speed options,” highlighting the “roughly one-day installation process that takes place almost solely on rooftops” that has helped make Rainbow the choice of some of the “country’s most well-known media rocket ships, including Twitter, BuzzFeed, and Vice Media.”

Along with powering top high-tech businesses, Rainbow also provides the fuel for major bandwidth-heavy events. A prime example of that in 2016 emerged in the LiveFronts event (held by Al Roker’s live streaming network Roker Media and strategic advisory firm BRaVe Ventures), which showcased the opportunities available for marketers and content producers on streaming platforms. The demos and panels took place all day using HD video, so it was obviously a major bandwidth undertaking in a venue that was not equipped to handle it all on its own. Rainbow Broadband seamlessly connected the event to its Gigabit network, maintaining an ultra-fast connection that recorded no failures throughout the day, with presenters and attendees sharing 40 Gb of HD video and audio in under an hour at one point. A full case study of the event can be read here.

It was another jam-packed year for mastering legend Vlado Meller, who put the finishing touches on A Tribe Called Quest’s highly-acclaimed #1 album We Got It From Here, Thank You 4 Your Service… as well as records from Celine Dion, ANOHNI, and more. Aside from mastering big records, Vlado continued leading his advanced three-day workshops, which have educated aspiring Vlados from all over the world on the fine arts of mastering. He spread a little of his knowledge in a Hypebot op-ed focused on how artists should properly prepare their albums for vinyl pressing.

SonicScoop took an in-depth look at the record from Vlado’s fellow Charleston residents Stop Light Observations in particular, examining the back story and mastering process of the single “Security” in its Mastering Analysis series. Vlado was also profiled in Mix Magazine’s mastering issue, with spotlight in particular on Vlado’s team in Charleston at Truphonic Recording, where Vlado relocated to from New York several years ago. Digital Trends also spoke with Vlado about his remastering work on the massive Lou Reed RCA and Arista Collection box set that was released this year, which he completed with Lou just before he passed in 2013.

Billboard broke the news that Bandsintown and Eventbrite, the ticketing platform with more than two million events a year, were partnering to give Eventbrite users the ability to promote shows targeted to Bandsintown fans based on artist preference, using the “Bandsintown Promoter” ad solution tool. In 2017, Bandsintown users will be able to discover and buy tickets for Eventbrite shows within the Bandsintown app or website, and ticket barcodes will appear directly within the Bandsintown app for the first time.

And if you need any last-minute holiday gift ideas, Bandsintown gave users a different kind of recommendation, its first “Concert Essentials” Holiday Gift Guide, presented in partnership with Ticketmaster. The guide includes apparel, cameras, music gear, and other accessories for those in your life who are obsessed with concerts. There’s even a chance to win a $500 gift card from Ticketmaster, so check it out!

Jaybird is also proud to serve as the Media Sponsor for the Copyright and Technology 2017 conference, which is being held January 24th in the NYU Kimmel Center’s Grand Hall. The full agenda for the event is online now at, including a keynote presentation from Michael Smith and Rahul Telang of Carnegie-Mellon University, authors of the book Streaming, Sharing, Stealing: Big Data and the Future of Entertainment, who will discuss big data analytics and its disruptive effects on the entertainment industries. Those who register with the code “jaybird100” get $100 off the price of admission.

“FOJB” (friends of Jaybird) can also get 10% off the Music 4.5 The Economics of Streaming and the Value Gap, which will be in New York on March 29th. Use the code “JAYBIRD.” Consider it our little holiday gift to you!

All in all, it’s been a thrilling year full of exciting news and big events, and we’re not slowing down anytime soon. We just began working with Tunespeak, a platform that connects the biggest names in music to their most loyal fans, and we can’t wait to help expose their great work to the world. Laurie has also been working with Dadascope Communications on the public media company PRX and its Radiotopia podcast network. We also wanted to give special congratulations to our friend and colleague Laura Goldberg, who we work with on BabyCenter‘s B2B communications – she will be honored on January 24th at PR News’ Top Women in PR Awards luncheon.

We’ll see you in 2017 at events like Digital Entertainment World, SXSW, the monthly NY Tech Meetups, and of course, Music Biz 2017. Happy holidays and have a very happy New Year!
