Word from a Bird

Season’s greetings from Jaybird Communications! We hope you’ve been enjoying the holidays and that you’ll have some time to relax and decompress from the year that was before we hit 2016. It’s been a great year for Jaybird and our clients, and over the past few months, we’ve been working hard on some major projects, including Border City Media’s day-by-day sales tracking of Adele’s 25 album, the Music Business Association’s first award announcements for Music Biz 2016, ole’s acquisition of Anthem Entertainment Group, Rainbow Broadband’s new fiber hub in SoHo, NY Tech Meetup’s popular monthly demo nights, Vlado Meller’s audio mastering workshops, Revelator’s embrace of the Blockchain, and Sixième Son’s involvement with the new single from Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour. Needless to say, we’ve been keeping busy. Here’s a more in-depth look at what we’ve been up to as we prepare for another big year! 
As Adele made history with her new album, 25, Border City Media and its BuzzAngle Music chart were there to track her progress day-by-day. Jaybird provided sales updates to major media outlets each day of her monumental debut week, resulting in BuzzAngle numbers featuring prominently in stories published by The New York Times, New York Post, International Business Times, Music Week, Music Business Worldwide, Cosmopolitan, Refinery29, and The Sun, among others. We also connected Border City CEO Jim Lidestri with prominent music industry interviewer Larry LeBlanc for his Q&A feature “In the Hot Seat with Larry LeBlanc,” which was published on Encore.
Music Business Association (Music Biz) President James Donio also lent his voice to the discussion around Adele’s massive achievement, discussing the event and its impact on year-end music sales with wire service AFP, which received significant international pickup in La Presse, Mundo 52, MSN, Le Journal de Montreal, and more. In addition, Donio’s status as an Adjunct Professor at Monmouth University helped push forward the creation of Music Biz’s Academic Partnership program, which allows over 1,000 students and faculty members at 12 affiliated colleges and universities around the nation to fully access Music Biz’s member resources without paying personal dues. Jaybird helped Music Biz spread the word about the new offering, landing a major feature in Music Connection that included an in-depth interview with Donio as well as additional media coverage in Music Row, All Access, and Everything Country.

With the New Year approaching, we have also begun breaking news on the upcoming Music Biz 2016 convention, which will be held May 16-18 at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel in Nashville. So far, Redeye has been named the winner of the Independent Spirit Award, John Esposito of Warner Music Nashville will receive the Presidential Award for Outstanding Executive Achievement, and up-and-coming country star Sam Hunt will receive a Breakthrough Artist award, with many more announcements coming soon. Jaybird’s outreach has so far led to media pickup in, Music Row, HITS Daily Double, All Access, and more.

Music Biz 2016 isn’t the only event the Association has been planning, though. Over the last several months, we’ve also helped them promote Music Startup Academy events in Denver, Philadelphia, and New York City. The first-ever Denver stop for the traveling educational series was written up in the Denver Post, Music Connection, and while the Philadelphia event was featured in the Philadelphia Tribune and the NYC date was featured in Music Connection and the  Startup One Stop and New York City Startup Digest email newsletters.

Jaybird also helped publicize Music Biz’s partnership with the Association for Electronic Music (AFEM), landing a major placement on The arrangement will lead to the creation of Electronic Music Workgroup where top executives in the EDM business can meet to discuss issues affecting their companies. The announcement was also covered by Music Week, Hypebot, Music Connection, M Magazine, CMU, Dancing Astronaut, and Associations Now.

The NY Tech Meetup (NYTM) has also been running along smoothly, continuing to sell out their monthly demo nights at NYU’s 850-seat Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. These events receive regular coverage in Xconomy – which provided detailed recaps of the monthly  demo nights – and were also shouted out in a FOX News article on the necessity of a marketing plan for startups under the header “Leverage Physical Events.” CNET also took notice of NYTM’s central place in the New York tech scene, recapping the organization’s August event and quoting NYTM Executive Director Jessica Lawrence in their piece on the broader NYC tech community.
Speaking of NYC tech, Jaybird has also been helping innovative wireless-internet service Rainbow Broadband expand their profile around the city. Capital NY covered the recent unveiling of Rainbow’s new fiber hub in SoHo, which allowed them to increase bandwidth and take on more clients in the rapidly expanding neighborhood. Taking things a step further, the Commercial Observer interviewed Rainbow Founder and President Russ Hamm along with the owners of a building recently wired by Rainbow, painting a concrete picture of the company’s offerings and how they help local businesses connect to the internet quickly and reliably at a lower cost.
Meanwhile in our great neighbor to the north, Jaybird client ole won big at this year’s Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMAs), taking home its ninth consecutive Music Publishing Company of the Year Award, the longest streak of any major or independent publisher. ole Chairman and CEO Robert Ott was also honored with the prestigious Leonard T. Rambeau International Award for his efforts to promote Canadian country music internationally. In the lead-up to this distinction, Jaybird secured an in-depth feature on Ott that ran in FYI Music News and also promoted a slew of artist deals signed shortly before the CCMAs and the first-ever on the spot event, a songwriting competition held during CCMA Week in which the winner received a deal with ole’s artist development program red dot. All in all, Jaybird’s CCMA outreach garnered coverage in outlets such as, Music Row, Music Connection, and more as well as the Billboard Country Update, A&R Worldwide, and Music Confidential email newsletters.

ole also pulled off a massive acquisition when it purchased the Anthem Entertainment Group, home of legendary rock band Rush as well as Big Wreck, Ian Thornley, Steven Page, The Tea Party, and more key figures in Canadian rock. The deal led to massive coverage in a variety of major outlets, starting with a Jaybird-procured exclusive with that led to further stories in Bloomberg Business, Yahoo Finance, Music Week, FYI Music News, Music Business Worldwide, CMU, Music Row, Encore, Canadian Musician, and more as well as the A&R Worldwide and Music Confidential email newsletters.

Jaybird also connected ole songwriters with Music Week’s “Writer’s Notes” feature, which profiles a different songwriter each week via a short Q&A. Recent issues have spotlighted ole songwriters Josh Dorr, Lindi Ortega, Matt Rogers, and Dave Turnbull. We also secured a Music Connection “Signing Story” for ole songwriter Jordan Davis, which ran in their November print issue and was later chosen as one of their favorite “Singing Stories” of the year in their December issue.

Jaybird has also been working with veteran mastering engineer Vlado Meller, landing him extensive profiles in a variety of high-profile music industry and recording websites. Just this week, Rick Goetz at posted a detailed Q&A with Meller, while Sound on Sound interviewed him for an in-depth profile and SonicScoop praised his mastering workshops in his Charleston, S.C., studio. He also spoke with Audio Media International, explaining what it takes to succeed in mastering.

Over the summer, we teamed with Israeli sales and marketing intelligence startup Revelator to spread the word about the company’s launch in the U.S. We began by announcing the appointment of former Universal Music exec Rob Wells to the Revelator advisory board, lining up interviews with Music Ally and Music Business Worldwide in which Wells discussed the state of data transparency in the music biz and how Revelator works to correct these problems. Later, the company jumped to the forefront of the music rights debate by announcing a partnership with Colu to create a music-rights API based on Blockchain technology. The move led to extensive coverage, including pieces in, International Business Times, Forbes, Music Business Unlimited, and more.

Jaybird also teamed up with audio branding company Sixième Son for a special project involving former Pink Floyd singer and guitarist David Gilmour, who sampled the company’s four-note jingle for French rail company SNCF in his single “Rattle That Lock” from his recently released solo album of the same name. The unique collaboration drew coverage from several major outlets, including the Wall Street Journal and International Business Times. Jaybird also secured a radio appearance for Colleen Fahey, U.S. Managing Director of Sixième Son, on American Public Media’s Marketplace Tech, where she discussed the project as well as audio branding in general.

As if that isn’t enough, Jaybird took over Digital Music NY meetup, which had its second session December 1st. The well-attended event featured presentations from Blake Morgan of ECR Music Group, Larry Miller of the Musonomics podcast, Alex Mitchell of Audiokite, Lisa Occhino of SonicBids, Mike Saloio of DMM/Superphone, and music/tech industry consultant and journalist Courtney Harding.
