Word from a Bird

We may be well into pumpkin season, but the heat is still on here at Jaybird. We’ve brought on exciting new clients Mixcloud and Thiel Audio; kept the momentum going for the Association of Independent Music Publishers (AIMP), Endless Riff, Music Business Association (Music Biz), NY Tech Alliance, Vlado Meller Mastering and VNUE. We’ve also been working with music historian David Metzer’s on his interesting and entertaining The Ballad in American Popular Music: From Elvis to Beyoncé – that and some Aurora by Thiel Audio wireless speakers, and your holiday shopping is done! (Amost). Check out what we’ve been up to below:

Jaybird got off to a fast start with Mixcloud, an online audio platform for long-form radio shows, DJ sets, and other content. We kicked off the project by placing an op-ed from Nikhil Shah, Co-Founder and Commercial Director of Mixcloud, in Music Business Worldwide, highlighting the company’s dedication to proper music licensing and a sustainable business model. Then, things really blew up when we announced Mixcloud’s first direct licensing deal with Warner Music Group. It all started with a piece in the Financial Times that quickly spread through major outlets such as Billboard, CMU, Engadget, Fast Company, Hypebot, Music Ally, Music Business Worldwide, Music Week, Variety, and many more. Stay tuned for more announcements into Q1!

We also helped the Music Business Association (Music Biz) begin its promotions for upcoming conferences NY:LON Connect and Music Biz 2018. NY:LON Connect, which will be held January 23-24, 2018, at the Dream Downtown Hotel in New York City, will feature high-level discussions on important music business topics with Spotify’s Stefan Blom confirmed to speak and many other big-name keynotes soon to be announced. Music Biz 2018, which will be held May 14-17 at the Omni Nashville Hotel in Nashville, will follow last year’s highly successful event, which drew 2,000 attendees, the most since 2001. So far, Jaybird has announced award recipients Cary Sherman of the RIAA, who will receive the Presidential Award for Outstanding Executive Achievement, and singer/songwriter Julia Michaels, who will receive a Breakthrough Artist Award. We also alerted press to the opening of the event’s Call for Presentations and registration, all resulting in press coverage in Billboard, Music Row, All Access, The Country Note, and more. Note that Call for Presentations is open until November 10. Finally, we announced that the Music Biz conference will remain in Nashville through 2020, securing coverage in Music Row and All Access.

We continued publishing monthly newsletters from the Association of Independent Music Publishers (AIMP), linking the activities of its Nashville, New York, and Los Angeles chapters while stoking press interest in their events. The Nashville chapter’s third annual Songwriter Series received attention from Music Row, which previewed the event and ran a photo from the festivities, and All Access. Other event coverage ran in SonicScoop and the print editions of Music Week and Music Connection. Jaybird also invited top-tier journalists to the organization’s upcoming talks in all three cities from David Israelite, President and CEO of the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA). Coverage has already run in Billboard; keep your eyes peeled for more from the events!

Jaybird has jumped into the world of physical products with Nashville-based high-end speaker company Thiel Audio. In August, we announced their new CEO, Elyse McKenna, including an event in their Studio and retail space in Nashville, resulting in press coverage from Nashville Business Journal, Music Row, Strata-Gee, and more. We also helped facilitate Thiel’s inclusion in the Luxury Technology Show to showcase their new wireless speakers, where they maintained a packed booth throughout the event, volunteered their speakers for the unveiling of the 2018 Lexus LS 500, and received a great reception from those on hand. Look ahead to pop-up store events throughout the fall.

We got a chance to dive into a the literary world with music historian David Metzer, whose new book The Ballad in American Popular Music: From Elvis to Beyoncé is now available internationally as an ebook and will be available in hard copy in the U.S. at the end of November for all your holiday gift lists! It’s a unique take on music history, embracing the ballad as a genre and tracing its development from the early days of rock and roll through modern times, touching on its applications in the country, hip-hop, rock, and indie worlds. We heartily recommend you check it out to gain a newfound appreciation for this often overlooked musical form.

Vlado Meller Mastering continues to help artists from all over the musical spectrum sound their very best, with recent mastering clients including legendary trumpet player Herb Alpert, Italian duo YOMBE, New Orleans brass-funk band Bonerama, Eric Silver, and Estee. Meller also recently held his latest round of workshops, in which four participants work closely with Meller over a three-day period at his Truphonic Recording Studios in Charleston, SC. Keep an eye on www.vladomastering.com for future workshop announcements!

The NY Tech Alliance has continued with a diverse series of NY Tech Meetup events, including a showcase of the businesses created during the Techstars NYC Summer 2017 class and an event based around digital security, featuring remarks from George Neville-Neil (a.k.a. “Kode Vicious”). The next few events will take place November 15 and December 6, so RSVP now if you haven’t already!

We were excited to roll out some more news on VNUE, a leader of live event recording that releases experiential content for fans. Outlets like Billboard and Hypebot shared the news around the acquisition of set.fm, a DIY platform that makes it easy for artists to record and sell their live shows directly to fans’ mobile devices, from direct-to-fan platform PledgeMusic. They also welcomed Lou Mann, a former Executive Vice President and General Manager of Capitol Records and president of Media Properties for House of Blues, to the team as Executive Vice President. And for a more personal update, VNUE’s CEO and Chairman Zach Bair penned a heartfelt piece for Music Think Tank detailing the ambition and gumption it took to make it in the music industry, from a child to the present day.

Finally, social live music VR platform Endless Riff has continued rolling along with amazing livestreams of performances from NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall from a virtual recreation of the venue, where users can interact with fellow friends tuning in from across the world. The company also began hosting content from virtuosic rockers Umphrey’s McGee and funk band Lettuce on its platform, where fans of each band can tune in and watch past performances, music videos and documentaries in a virtual environment with their friends.

We hope you have an amazing fall, and don’t forget to get in touch if you need any help with social media, marketing plans, events, content creation, and of course, public relations going in to 2018. We’re always looking for new additions to the Jaybird family and would love to chat!
