Word from a Bird

Game of Thrones must be behind the times, because winter is here in New York City. And while it may be cold and snowy, that hasn’t stopped us from driving forward on behalf of our clients. As the calendar turned, Jaybird has secured some major placements for Music Business Association (Music Biz) President James Donio on Fox Business News, and in print for Entertainment Weekly and Financial Times.  NYTM kicked off its 10th anniversary year with two meetups, and Bandsintown announced its partnership with Sony Music Unlimited. We’re moving into the thick of conference season, so mark your calendars and book those travel plans.

Jaybird was able to land our clients some plum speaking spots at two of the biggest on the books. First up is Digital Entertainment World in Los Angeles on February 18-20, which will feature presentations from Julien Mitelberg of Bandsintown and Bill Wilson of Music Biz. Mitelberg will speak during the “Selling Experiences: Monetizing the Artist-Fan Connection” panel on Wednesday, February 19, at 5pm, while Wilson will moderate the “Understanding Metadata and Its Importance in Today’s Digital Entertainment Environment” panel on Thursday, February 20, at 2pm. Jaybird President Laurie Jakobsen will there all week, so DM @jaybirdcom or LinkedIn to meet up in LA.

In addition, Mitelberg and Wilson, as well as NYTM’s Jessica Lawrence and Bandsintown’s Randy Nichols, will present during this year’s SXSW on March 7-16 in Austin, TX. Lawrence is running a three-hour workshop during the conference’s Interactive portion, discussing the importance of building a high-quality workplace during “Beyond Ping Pong Tables: Building Better Companies” on Sunday, March 9, at 3:30pm. Note workshops have a special signup link. Wilson, Nichols, and Mitelberg will all present during the Music portion, with Wilson continuing his role as an ambassador for standardized metadata at “Beyond the Play Button: Images & Album Credits” on Wednesday, March 12, at 2pm; Nichols putting his tour management skills to work for indie bands at “Smart Touring (Don’t Lose Your Shirt)” on Thursday, March 13, at 3:30pm; and Mitelberg explaining how to capitalize on fan data during “The Rise of Influence Marketing in Music” on Friday, March 14, at 5pm.

Speaking of conferences, Music Biz’s annual event, Music Biz 2014, is fast approaching on May 6-8 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. Fittingly, we’ve been spreading the word about the conference’s just-announced honorees: Sylvia Rhone, Founder and CEO of Epic Records-distributed record label Vested in Culture, who will receive the Presidential Award for Sustained Executive Achievement, and Jonathan Poneman, Co-Founder of influential indie label Sub Pop Records, who will receive the Independent Spirit Award. So far, the news has been reported in Billboard.biz, JET, Black Enterprise, All Access, and HITS Daily Double. And we’re just getting started! Keep an eye out for many more announcements in the coming weeks, including our first full program preview.Music Biz is also running a Valentine’s Day promotion based on its “Most Romantic Albums of All Time” and “Love Hurts” lists. Featuring 100 great albums for lovers and 50 tracks for those in a less loving mood, respectively, the lists were created based on the voting of employees of commercial members of Music Biz. There’s a little something for everyone, from Pop to R&B and Jazz to Country, so go check them out and be sure to tell all your friends! And if that’s not enough, we also managed to book Music Biz President James Donio a TV appearance on Fox Business News and interviews with the Financial Times and Inc. to discuss year-end music sales and the future of streaming services, not to mention a talk with Entertainment Weekly about Beyoncé’s surprise album release. The organization also released its first new product since its rebrand with the Music Startup Network, a social network for startups that connects them with rightsholders and other content partners. The news garnered coverage from the likes of Billboard.biz, Hypebot, Evolver.fm, and more. Finally, we publicized the addition of YouTube’s Fred Beteille to the Music Biz Board of Directors, landing coverage in HITS Daily Double and Radio Facts. Whew!
Things got a bit scandalous at this month’s NY Tech Meetup (NYTM), as erotic demos from Vibease, a smartphone-controlled vibrator, and DOWN (fka Down with Friends), a Facebook app that hooks up friends of friends, had everyone talking. So far, the event and its demoers have been covered by Forbes, Alleywatch, High Tech Realm, and In Flex We Trust and featured on WCBS Radio, with many more likely to come.It was also the second demo night of NYTM’s 10th-anniversary year! To celebrate, the organization is inviting an alumni demoer back to the stage each month to share how they have grown since their first appearance. So far, Lenddo and KeyMe have helped get the nostalgia flowing, and we can’t wait to see who they’ll be bringing back in the months ahead!
There was big news in the Bandsintown camp, as the service announced a new deal with Sony Music Unlimited that will allow users to preview songs from within the Bandsintown app while they check out tour dates. Considering Bandsintown’s focus on recommending concerts from new acts you might not have heard, it’s a big get. And the media seemed to feel the same way, with stories on the partnership appearing in Billboard.biz, The Next Web, Evolver.fm, and Hypebot, among others. Go try it out!The company is also appearing at a variety of major industry events. In addition to the aforementioned Digital Entertainment World and SXSW panels featuring Mitelberg and Nichols, Cellfish Founder and CEO Fabrice Sergent got into the act at DLD14, where he was interviewed alongside music industry veteran Lyor Cohen. You can watch this meeting of the minds, in which the two discussed music in the digital era, right here. But that’s not all! Bandsintown will also be showing off their wares at this year’s Pollstar Live! conference in Nashville, TN, from February 19-21. So if you’ll be in town, make sure you head on over and see what they’ve been working on.
Last but certainly not least, we’re excited to welcome our two newest clients to the fold! You’ll be hearing more soon about Showbizy, Border City Media, OpenAura and Shannon Curtis. And if you’re looking to kickstart your own company’s initiatives, feel free to contact us – we’re planning to grow in 2014! We’re happy to sit down, discuss your communication needs, and help craft a strategy that moves your company forward. Whether social media, marketing plans, events, content creation or just plain ol’ public relations, Jaybird knows how to choose and use the right communications tools to deliver on your business’ goals. Thanks, and we’ll see you in the spring!
