Word from a Bird

No winter doldrums at Jaybird! Since last we spoke, we’ve kicked off promotions for the Music Business Association‘s flagship Music Biz 2018 conference celebrating their 60th anniversary, ran a campaign publicizing the Association of Independent Music Publishers‘ 40th anniversary, got the word out about Mixcloud‘s new partnership with Gracenote, helped Music Reports ring in a major milestone, and continued to deliver value for the NY Tech AllianceEndless RiffVlado Meller, and VNUE. And if that’s not enough, our own Kyle Wall landed some killer press coverage for his forthcoming album under the moniker Wharfer. Learn more below!

The Association of Independent Music Publishers (AIMP) kicked off its 40th anniversary year in December with events in New York City, Nashville, and Los Angeles. The events — which featured awards given to Congressman Jerrold Nadler, NMPA President David Israelite, Kenny MacPherson’s Big Deal Music Group, and Downtown Music Publishing CEO Justin Kalifowitz — were highlighted in outlets including HITS Daily DoubleAmerican SongwriterMusic Row, and Music Connection. The Association also shared statements in support of the recently-introduced Music Modernization Act and the Copyright Royalty Board’s (CRB) decision to increase streaming royalties by 44% over the next five years, leading to coverage in Music WeekMusic Business WorldwideComplete Music Update (CMU), Music Row, and more. The AIMP’s Nashville chapter also launched a new weekly podcast series, “AIMP Nashville Pubcast,” featuring a different 30-minute interview with a prominent Nashville publisher each episode. AIMP’s Los Angeles Chapter will also welcome prominent entertainment attorney Don Passman, Esq., on April 19, when he will deliver a presentation on where the money is in music today, Finally, we’re looking ahead to working on the organization’s second AIMP Indie Publisher Summit, coming up June 12 in New York.
As always, Mixcloud has kept very busy over the last few months. In news covered by BillboardMusic WeekHypebot, and more, the platform announced a partnership with Nielsen’s Gracenote on advanced music recognition that will more accurately identify copyrighted audio content to ensure proper royalty payments to rights holders. In December, Mixcloud also revealed some fascinating end-of-year data on global listening habits that spurred coverage in MixmagEarmilk, and Digital Music News and a lot of discussion on Twitter. (For example, did you know that reggae is the most-listened-to genre on Mixcloud in California?) In addition to rolling out some great new content – including the official channel of deadmau5’s mau5trap label – the company was also proud to be announce the next phase in its partnership with W Hotels and their “Future Rising” platform, as well as compatibility with Pioneer DJ’s new DJM-REC app.
2018 marks the 60th anniversary of the Music Business Association, and we’ve continued rolling out some of the big guests lined up for Music Biz 2018 at the Omni Nashville Hotel in Nashville, May 14-17. In addition to previously-announced honorees like Grammy nominee Julia Michaels (Breakthrough Artist Award) and the RIAA’s Cary Sherman (Presidential Award For Outstanding Executive Achievement), music business entrepreneur and philanthropist Scooter Braun will receive the prestigious Harry Chapin Memorial Humanitarian Award (and deliver a keynote address), industry veteran Lyor Cohen will keynote a Featured Presentation, and Republic Records EVP of A&R Wendy Goldstein will keynote the Music’s Leading Ladies Speak Out program. Those announcements garnered coverage in outlets including BillboardHypebotMusic RowAll Access and more.

Outside of Music Biz 2018, the Music Business Association co-managed the NY:LON Connect event held January 23-24 in New York City (along with Music Ally), featuring a wide-ranging discussion of international music industry issues. The capacity gather of industry execs was covered extensively in BillboardMusic Ally and Rockol as well as the e-newsletters SXSW Daily Chord, MusicREDEF, The Dean’s List and Motive Unknown.

Music Reports announced a major new milestone as 2017 wound down – one million tracks claimed using the free Songdex® Claiming System, as noted in a Billboard story. That same month, the company released some timely data on the most-recorded holiday songs (“Silent Night” and “White Christmas” topped the list if you missed it) that was turned into a nifty USA Today infographic and syndicated to other major newspapers. Don’t miss the Music Reports team at upcoming events including Digital Entertainment World this week in Los Angeles and on the “Rights Done Right” panel at SXSW March 14.
It was another exciting few months for the NY Tech Alliance, with monthly NY Tech Meetup (NYTM) events featuring a wide range of demoers that do everything from distribute fresh food from restaurants to hungry families, match women with the perfect bra using crowdsourced data, improve energy efficiency based on whether people are in a room, and many more. TouchCast was on hand at the last two events to record smart-video interviews with demoers, and you can check out pieces on Micgoat, Xooloo, Bounce, Food Rescue, and Adjacent at the links. The February NYTM, sponsored by La French Tech NYC, will be held on February 6 with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) projects, highlighting a number of companies working in the space. The event is already sold out, so we hope you got your tickets! If so, we’ll see you at NYTM’s new venue, AppNexus (28 W. 23rd St. between 5th and 6th Ave.).
As the VR industry rolls out new products and innovations at CES and beyond, Endless Riff has been continuing to show off its live music-centric social VR platform, with 100+ shows live-streamed in total from stunning virtual environments. Whether it’s alt-country star Patterson Hood (of Drive-By Truckers) or rising acts like The Brother Brothers and The Rad Trads, the virtual recreation of NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall has continued to draw in users eager to get the full experience of a show there, regardless of what part of the world they call home. Endless Riff also live-streamed a special Halloween run from jam-band superstars (and fellow cutting-edge tech enthusiasts) Umphrey’s McGee.
Vlado Meller has continued proving why he’s the master of mastering, with new releases from AWOLNATION, Jade Bird, Kansas, The Wombats, and Engelbert Humperdinck. Music he worked on was also nominated for several Grammys, including songs from Herb Alpert, Code Orange, Tauren Wells, and Albita. Meanwhile, Jeremy Lubsey of Vlado Meller Mastering shared his personal favorite reference tracks for mastering on SonicScoopVlado himself will share his decades of skills with aspiring audio engineers at this spring’s edition of his Mastering Workshop Series at Truphonic Recording Studios in Charleston, S.C. from March 9-11. Check out www.vladomastering.com for info on the next workshop in October as well as future announcements!
VNUE, the leader of live event recording that releases experiential content for fan, continued rolling out partnerships with artists like Ron Pope, Ryan Cabrera and Rob Thomas (the latter of which was announced in HITS Daily Double), while CEO and Chairman Zach Bair appeared on the Music Biz Weekly podcast to discuss how artists can monetize their live shows with VNUE, its recent acquisition of the set.fm instant mobile recording platform, and how it gives fans a chance to permanently savor the full experience of a live show.
Our own Kyle Wall has also been quite busy with his experimental folk project Wharfer. His new album, The Road Dissolved the View, will be released on February 9. But you can already hear the whole thing over at Noisey, which is hosting an exclusive stream of the record alongside an in-depth interview with Kyle. Earlier, Consequence of Sound premiered the album’s first single, “Lumière,” along with a separate interview on the song’s influences. Go give it a listen!
We hope you’re able to keep warm the rest of this winter, and be sure to stay tuned over the coming months, as Jaybird has lots of exciting things in the pipeline. Don’t forget that we’re always happy to chat about what we can do for you and your company, so don’t hesitate to reach out about any help you may need with social media, marketing plans, executive positioning, events, content creation, and public relations.
