Word from a Bird

It’s summertime, and we hope you’re enjoying the warmth and sun as we head into the Fourth of July holiday! While this season is typically a quiet one, we’ve been working hard to ensure that our clients continue making noise in some of the biggest publications around, and the results speak for themselves. In the past few months, we were heavily involved in organizing and promoting the Music Business Association’s Music Biz 2017 conference in May, announcing the merger of NY Tech Meetup and the New York Technology Council to form the NY Tech Alliance in early June, publicizing Music Reports’ historic licensing agreement with the U.S. Copyright Office, and helping to create and promote videos and infographics for Rainbow Broadband and Vlado Meller. It’s all led to significant coverage in diverse outlets such as Forbes, Billboard, the New York Business Journal, American Songwriter, HITS Daily Double, Music Row, The Tennessean, Crain’s New York, and many more. Read more below!

TheMusic Business Association held their annual convention, Music Biz 2016, in Nashville from May 16-18, and Laurie and Bill from Jaybird were on-site to help! But before the convention even started, we were already hard at work locking up interviews for Music Biz President James Donio, leading to in-depth convention previews in HITS Magazine, The Tennessean, and Music Week. We also succeeded in pitching Donio for inclusion on Music Row’s 2016 InCharge list of Nashville influencers.

Big events at the convention included the Awards Luncheon, which led to multiple pieces in Forbes and Music Row (we also organized and managed the pre-event red carpet attended by crews from the Associated Press, Getty Images, Hotspot Nashville, and more); the Awards Breakfast, covered by Billboard,HITS Daily Double, and Music Row; the first-ever “Finding Your Voice: Music’s Leading Ladies Speak Out” sessions, where Mary Wilson of The Supremes and GRAMMY-winning songwriting trio the Love Junkies garnered coverage from The Tennessean, Music Row, and the Tennessee Tribune; a variety of sessions geared toward songwriters, which were recapped in an in-depth article from American Songwriter; and the “Accelerating Acceptance: Music and the Importance of LGBT Fans” panel, which struck a chord around the nation with stories published by VICE’s i-D, Billboard, Music Week, and HITS Daily Double.

In the end, Jaybird’s efforts led to a wide assortment of press coverage from national and local outlets as well as a strong showing on Twitter with well over 2,000 messages featuring the official #MusicBiz2016 hashtag. We can’t wait for Music Biz 2017, which will return to Nashville for the third straight year from May 15-18, 2017!

Jaybird began working with rights administration platform Music Reports in May. Billboard recently took an in-depth look at the company becoming the first to offer electronic filing of mechanical licenses for on-demand streaming with the United States Copyright Office, noting that the office has “taken an important step” led by Music Reports, “a key facilitator in helping services to pay publishers.” Music Reports also just teamed with Pandora on managing the mechanical licensing and royalty administration and “increasing the openness and transparency of its payment process” for its upcoming interactive streaming service.  Music publishers can now create their own free accounts with Music Reports, to see licensing and reporting information, review unmatched tracks, and check out potential licensing opportunities.

We were proud to help spread the word about NY Tech Meetup’s merger with the New York Technology Council, forming the NY Tech Alliance. The combined organization’s mission is to represent, inspire, support, and help lead the New York technology community and ecosystem to create a better future for all, and with more than 60,000 members already, it’s well on its way to doing just that. Jaybird handled press outreach for the merger, landing a full-page profile of CEO Jessica Lawrence Quinn inCrain’s New York Business and additional coverage in the New York Business Journal, Bloomberg, and Xconomy. The Alliance will continue to hold monthly NY Tech Meetup demo nights, and you can catch the next one on Tuesday, July 12th! The next two ticket releases will take place at 1pm on July 5th and 8th at www.meetup.com/ny-tech/events/229675481.

Not Just Press Releases…
Jaybird has also been working on different types of communications content for clients, including video, infographics, and social media.

Rainbow Broadband, which provides high-speed Internet to a who’s-who of NYC’s fastest-growing businesses and biggest events, has continued to educate its current and potential customers on the service that it provides, releasing an infographic with WiredScore on which questions a business should ask about a building’s connectivity before moving in, and more coming in July.

Mastering legend Vlado Meller has filmed and shared two new promotional videos highlighting his 40+ years as the premier mastering engineer in the music industry – working with stars from Kanye and Prince to Celine and Sinatra – as well as the intensive three-day mastering workshops he’s been hosting in his new home in Charleston, South Carolina.

Happy to be helping out music business author extraordinaire Fred Goodman around the recent paperback publication of his biography Allen Klein: The Man Who Bailed Out the Beatles, Made the Stones, and Transformed Rock & Roll. His opinion piece “‘Stairway to Heaven’ a ripoff? What copyright law doesn’t acknowledge about the creative process” ran in the Los Angeles Times around the Led Zeppelin/Spirit trial, and we’re advising him on social media as well.

Whew! After all that, you’d think we’d be off kicking back at the beach. But the SXSW PanelPicker just opened – we have lots of work to do to prep our clients for the post-Labor Day frenzy into 2017! We’re always on the lookout for interesting projects as well, so if you’re working on something special and need help with marketing plans, events, social media, content creation, or public relations, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’d love to talk and see how we can get you the exposure you deserve. Have an amazing summer!
