Word from a Bird

Wow, it’s been quite a winter! We’re certainly ready for Spring Break  – we mean,  SXSW March 13-22 in Austin, TX. Paltalk, NY Tech Meetup, the Music Business Association, Border City Media, and 7digital will all be represented, sponsoring major parties, leading and participating in panels, and more – Jaybird’s Kyle Wall will be there, so connect with him if you’ll be in Austin. And don’t forget about ole and Vlado Meller Mastering, which have also been keeping our plates full over the last few months. So without further ado, here’s where we’ve been and where we’re going.

SXSW is only a few weeks away, and Jaybird clients are set to make quite a splash in Austin this year! Paltalk will be sponsoring morning talk show host and celebrity chef Rachael Ray’s annual party, which always ends up as a yearly highlight. Word is that Paltalk has something special tucked up its sleeve, so stay tuned to find out what it is!Jessica Lawrence of NY Tech Meetup (NYTM) will be the sole presenter at the “What Tech Startups Should Be Doing Next” event on March 13 at 3:30pm. It’s one of several events that will be presented by NYTM alongside the NYC Economic Development Corporation and Digital.NYC as part of NYC Tech in Austin. This series of events, meant to showcase New York as a central hub for tech innovation while highlighting some of its top companies, also includes a special NYTM demo event on March 16 at 3:30pm, a booth at the SXSW Trade Show from March 15-18, and much more. For more info, visit www.nyctechinaustin.com.7digital CEO Simon Cole will also be on hand to moderate “Gear Up, Lean Back: Linear Radio Becomes Dynamic” on March 19 at 3:30pm and Chief Commercial Officer Peter Downton will participate in the “Content, Copyright and Commerce” panel on March 17 at 5pm. In addition, Bill Wilson, Vice President of Digital Strategy and Business Development of the Music Business Association (Music Biz), will lend his expertise to two panels: “Finding the Best API for Your Music App” on March 17 at 3:30pm and “Beyond Genre: How to Better Connect Fans w/ Music” on March 18 at 11am. Jim Lidestri of Border City Media will also participate in the “Behind the Curtain: How Data Is Changing the Modern Music Business” panel on March 19 at 2pm.Finally, our good friends at Audiokite will be demoing at this year’s SXSW Startup Spotlight from 4-6pm on March 16. So, if you find yourself in Austin for the big event, make sure you check out all these panels and events!
And speaking of big events, Music Biz is preparing for its annual industry convention, Music Biz 2015, which will be held in Nashville for the first time on May 12-14. We’ve been helping them roll out program announcements over the last few months, including the selection of Big Machine Label Group President/CEO and American Idol mentor Scott Borchetta to receive the prestigious Presidential Award for Outstanding Executive Achievement, Country star Martina McBride to receive the Harry Chapin Memorial Humanitarian Award, and classic Rock band The Doobie Brothers to receive the Chairman’s Award for Sustained Creative Achievement. Collectively, we were able to secure coverage in Rolling Stone, Billboard.biz, Music Row, Music Connection, HITS Daily Double, Country Weekly, The Boot, The Tennessean, and more, with the McBride news also being picked up and distributed to radio stations via Associated Press Broadcast. It’s shaping up to be a great event, so make sure to visit www.musicbiz2015.com and register ASAP. Early bird discounts are only available through March 8, so the earlier you register, the more you’ll save!
Coming off its 10th anniversary celebration, ole continued expanding its catalog, signing deals with 2101 Songs – home to co-writers major hits such as “Starships” (Nicki Minaj), “Live While We’re Young” (One Direction), “On the Floor” (Jennifer Lopez), “Who’s That Chick” (David Guetta and Rihanna), and “Rain Over Me” (Pitbull and Marc Anthony) – and Cineflix, a producer and distributor of TV content that adds to ole’s growing collection of over-the-top digital content. Jaybird helped spread the word about both deals, landing coverage in Billboard, HITS Daily Double, Music Connection, Music Business Worldwide, World Screen, Advanced Television, Music Confidential, and more. We also scored an on-camera interview for ole’s John Ozier in which he discussed the then-upcoming season of American Idol with FOX TV Nashville, and promoted ole’s GRAMMY win for Best R&B Song for “Drunk in Love,” recorded by Beyoncé featuring Jay Z and co-written by ole songwriter Timbaland. Congratulations!
We’re excited to be working with ace audio mastering engineer, Vlado Meller, who recently mastered Kanye West’s new single “Only One” featuring Paul McCartney and has previously worked on major albums and tracks from Beastie Boys, Andrea Bocelli, Johnny Cash, Celine Dion, Duran Duran (my favorite!), Michael Jackson, Lil Wayne, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shakira, Barbra Streisand, Weezer, Jack White, and many more. He recently relocated his studio to Charleston, SC, and will be hosting two mastering workshops there on March 13-15 and May 29-31. Make sure you sign up to learn from the best! We also landed Meller an interview with Musicians Friend, in which he discussed what goes into mastering an album or song and why it’s important. Stay tuned for much more news to come from Vlado!
Awards season has been good to the music industry, with this year’s GRAMMYs and Oscars leading to big sales gains for winners and performers. Luckily, Border City Media and its BuzzAngle Music product were there to measure the bounces, finding that GRAMMY Album of the Year winner Beck received a whopping 2,107% spike for his Morning Phase and an even more impressive 7,343% bump for his song “Heart Is a Drum.” One week later, the Oscars led to a massive sales jump for Common and John Legend’s “Glory,” which won Best Original Song and was performed during the ceremony. You can check out the full stats from the GRAMMYs here and the Oscars here.

Jaybird has been working with LBG Public Relations on trade-related PR for BabyCenter, the #1 pregnancy and parenting website in the world. One of their most recent announcements was a research report with the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and its Mobile Marketing Center of Excellence, “2015 State of Modern Motherhood: Mobile and Media in the Lives of Moms,” which compared and contrasted the technology habits and media behaviors of online moms ages 18 to 32 in the U.S., Brazil, Canada, China, and the U.K. If you have any interest in mobile and millennials, this data will be very interesting to you – this generation of moms is much more leading edge in their use of technology to manage their lives. And in video about the data, one new mom from the study noted she now paid for a subscription music service because when commercials came on in the car, it made her child wake up and cry!

Now it’s time to pull our spring clothes out of the closet as we prepare for the Austin heat, not to mention a (hopefully) warm spring to come. There are a lot of big things happening that we wish we could tell you about now, but keep an eye on our website for lots of news soon to come from all of our clients. And if you’re in need of any help with social media, marketing plans, events, content creation, or public relations, then please get in touch. We’d love to talk to you about how we can help kick your business up a notch!Bill Greenwood                 Laurie Jakobsen                 Kyle WallLaurie Jakobsen, President
